POLITICS AND ELECTIONS
Elections give us the opportunity to feel ourselves free in some way. We are given the right to vote and to choose our country’s rulers according to our own wishes. However, how surprising it can be, but the election returns and our wishes coincide very seldom. Though we are said to have freedom in election. Speaking of my experiences as a voter, I can’t say that I’m a politically involved person. Though once at the age of 18 I happened to go to the polls. It is well known that people who have come of age enjoy the right to vote. And at that time my intention to go to a polling station and to cast my vote for or against this or that candidate seemed to me to be my civic duty. We had to elect the Mayor of our town. A lot of leaflets agitating us for voting for this or that candidate were distributed and we could see a lot of different posters on the walls of almost every building in the town. We could watch a number of walk abouts that the candidates used to do from time to time during their pre-election campaigns. Someone of the candidates was the front-runner of the election race, someone was trailing behind. Then one of them gained ground and the opponents ran neck to neck. As for me I didn’t hesitated at all and decided at once who I was going to cast my vote for. Actually I don’t know what factors I was guided by. The voting procedure was ordinary. I got a ballot paper, entered a polling booth, ticked the candidate I liked and then dropped the ballot paper into a ballot box. After a day or two I found out the elections were considered to be void because of a low turn out of people. It turned out that people were not interested in the elections as they didn’t believe in their fairness. They were afraid that there could be vote rigging and their votes could not be counted properly. Some days later the re-election was organized but this time I decided to abstain from voting and I do the same today. I just lost my interest in politics.
