9-a. Assess
the following statement. Agree or disagree with it. Give reasons;
Progressive educators believe that given a nice friendly
teacher and lots of freedom of action and very little planning, the students
will always be good-natured, orderly, interested, motivated, well-behaved and
studious, in short, nice themselves.
I think that this statement is
not totally right. Of course, students of any age need some freedom of action to
develop their initiative. But this freedom
shouldnТt turn into anarchy and insubordination. So, freedom is a double-edged
weapon. A nice friendly teacher can УspoilФ his students by giving them too much
rope and lose his authority as a teacher. A teacher who is too much of a
dictator can suppress interest and lose touch with his students. Students always
find the joint in their teacherТs armour, so any teacher should be
wise and strong enough to take up a firm attitude from the very beginning and
stay on a charted course. I
believe that discipline is a clue to successful education, but a teacher ought
to keep some controlled freedom for his students not to suppress their
initiative too much.
It is common knowledge that planning is a necessary
condition for teaching. Any subject has its own logic of studying, and a wise
teacher ought to keep to the plan of the subject. It makes the process of
learning easier. Students, of course, are active participants of the process,
but only a teacher ought to be the real leader in the class. A teacher shouldnТt
give up to his studentsТ wishes to change the subject of a lesson, especially if
the suggested subject is not fitted for the plan; he ought to be able to direct
his studentsТ interest into the right channel. Students will take their teacher
more seriously if they know he enforce the rules he include in his syllabus.
Students will never be Уgood-natured, orderly, interested,
motivated, well-behaved and studious, in short, nice themselvesФ if their
teacher doesnТt work hard at their behaviour and skills. Moreover, any teacher
ought to work at his own skills and progress.

What is so gratifying about being a teacher?
A teacherТs life is not a bed of roses, it is true. If youТre a good teacher,
you are concerned with your pupils, their relationships with their class-mates
and parents; you care for their knowledge, their
behaviour and so on. You need to work out plans and tasks, it takes too much
time. But some people insist that teaching has a good side and to be a teacher
is to be a happy man. Why?
To be a teacher (a real, good teacher) means not only to work hard on plans
and lessons, it means to get a
certain amount of good emotions, to get pleasure from teaching. It is so
pleasant to see good marks of students, especially if a group was so difficult
and backward from the beginning! It is so great to feel studentsТ unspoken warm
thanks for the lesson and new information they got! I like being a teacher, I
like the feeling of excitement before every lesson, I feel like an actor before
his first appearance on the stage. Every lesson is like a little play for me. I
try to help my students to get knowledge and orient themselves in our hard life,
and they pay me back with their love and respect. And these warm emotions
outweigh the difficulties of the teacherТs life.
Text
УDeeper than ShameФ by C.P. Snow
1) Answer the
questions in ex. LA-2 orally and on the basis of your answers write about what
kind of person Jago was, what feelings he aroused in the people who surrounded
him
Paul Jago was a warm and sympathetic man. I think that he always made a matter
of conscience; he was an ambitious and proud man. Jago could be held back by
oneТs nature and at the same time longed passionately for what he couldnТt take.
He was diffident about his power among men. He could bring sympathy to other
people, but he was obsessed by the ambitions.
2) What is the
main idea of the story?
As I can see, the main idea of this short extract is that a manТs ambitions
should never substitute for civic and human virtue of any man. If a man thinks
only of his career and chances to obtain some important post, he can lose Уtrue
senseФ of life and get nothing. Pride and ambitions corrupt any man. They led to
disappointments, anxieties, inhibitions, humiliations, etc. Pride and ambitions
never should outweigh all his other characteristics.
